Suicide Assessment, Treatment, and Management: A Trauma Informed Approach
The 6-hour Trauma-Informed Suicide Assessment, Treatment, and Management: A Trauma Informed Approach course meets the requirements of KRS 210.366 for licensed qualified mental health providers in the state of Kentucky. This course was designed for providers working with youth and/or adults and is focused on ensuring the assessment and treatment of suicidal clients is conducted in a trauma-informed manner. The competencies covered in this training will be presented using a trauma-informed approach and will include: collaborating with clients who are suicidal, understanding suicide terms and statistics, collecting accurate assessment information (risk factors, protective factors, and warning signs) including trauma exposure, formulating and documenting suicide risk, developing trauma-informed treatment and services plan including a safety plan, lethal means restriction, managing care of clients, and understanding/legal and ethical issues related to suicide. Participants will have the opportunity to work in partners and/or small groups as they apply the learning material to case vignettes and discussion prompts. Participants will receive handouts and a variety of resources from the Crisis Text Line and similar organizations that can be used with clients and their families.
This course follows the recommended competencies from the Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk curriculum, which was designed by the American Association of Suicidology and the Suicide Prevention Resource Center and is listed on the best practices registry of these organizations. Additionally, this course will include discussions of trauma-informed approaches and strategies to be used in the assessment and management of suicidal clients. Therefore, the principles of Trauma-Informed Care from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is another integral organization that will be a foundation for this training. This course will utilize current published research and resources from the following organizations: Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, American Association of Suicidology, Suicide Prevention Resource Center, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, National Institute of Mental Health, Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide, Centers for Disease Control, Suicide Prevention Information and Awareness, Crisis Text Line, The Trevor Project, and the Center for Prevention and Research.

This course is approved for CEUs in Kentucky only; participants practicing outside of Kentucky are responsible for determining whether their state accepts Kentucky CEU approvals through reciprocity.
