2022-2023 Eastern KY Trauma-Informed Practices for Educators and School Personnel Learning Collaborative Registration

Welcome to the registration page for the Trauma-Informed Practices for Educators and School Personnel Learning Collaborative for the Eastern Kentucky region! While districts in this region are preferred, any district can join this session. Please note that this learning collaborative includes in-person live sessions to be held at the Mountain Arts Center in Prestonsburg, KY.

This learning collaborative is an opportunity for school personnel to learn about and implement trauma-informed practices in their schools and districts.  Trauma-informed Practices can help students who have been exposed to trauma learn and function more effectively at school. This learning collaborative helps schools meet the requirements of the School Safety and Resiliency Act (KRS 158/SB1) that requires the development of a trauma-informed team in each district and a plan for implementing trauma-informed approaches in schools.

Participating teams from schools or districts will attend three learning sessions. Learning session 1 is a 2 day in-person event, learning session 2 is a 1 day in person event, and learning session 3 is a virtual event.  Each team will develop a plan for implementing a trauma informed practice in their school and have an opportunity to participate in ongoing sharing and support through online learning calls and an online communication platform.  There is no charge for participation or the training material but space is limited. This learning collaborative is open to districts within Kentucky.

Participants in the TIPE Learning Collaborative will:

  • Understand the types of trauma exposure school age children experience
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of traumatic stress
  • Learn the effects of trauma on the developing brain
  • Appreciate the impact of trauma on cognitive, social, emotional and behavioral functioning
  • Learn and practice school-based strategies to build resilience and support improved self-regulation to mitigate the negative effects of trauma exposure on students
  • Understand the impact of secondary trauma exposure on school staff
  • Develop realistic goals and plans for implementing trauma-informed approaches in their schools and problem-solve barriers to implementation and sustainability in real-time
  • Prepare to meet the requirements of the School Safety and Resilience Act
  • Learn how to create a trauma-informed team and develop plan for implementing trauma-informed approaches

Recommendations for participation:

  • Teams attending the training should be comprised of at least 2 school or district staff
  • Strong teams are interdisciplinary and ideally are multidisciplinary and include Teachers, School Counselors, School Psychologists, School Social Workers, Administrative Leaders and School Safety or Resource Officers.
  • Schools should grant release time to all team members to attend face-to-face and online learning sessions
