Comprehensive Assessment Training Services Project (CATS)
This practicum provides opportunities for the student to work on a multidisciplinary team of professionals (i.e., Clinical Social Workers, Psychologist, Clinical Counselors, Psychiatrists) conducting multidimensional evidence-based assessments of maltreated children and their families for Cabinet for Health and Family Services and Court. The student will gain a specific skill set in assessing children, adult, and familial relationships. They will be able to conduct child and adult clinical interviews, perform developmental screens, administer and interpret child and adult psychometric measures, conduct parent-child and family interactions, and contribute to the team process of writing conclusions and placement/treatment recommendations for all participants in the evaluation. This educational experience includes a sequential process of learning child assessment and relational procedures during the first semester and adult assessment procedures during the second semester. The student will receive individual and group supervision. There are also opportunities for the student to complete a graduate level research project utilizing data collected from these assessments.
Child and Adolescent Trauma Treatment and Training Institute (CATTTI)
The student placement at CATTTI focuses on the provision of direct clinical services for children and adolescents (aged 3-18) and their non-offending caregivers who have experienced a traumatic event(s) ranging from interpersonal violence (sexual and physical abuse) to exposure to neglect/violence/impaired caregivers and natural disasters. Over 90% of clients have experienced multiple traumatic events. This educational experience involves formal training and supervision in an evidence-based trauma-focused EBT for children and adolescents, such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) or Trauma Affect Regulation: Guide for Education and Therapy (TARGET). Training and clinical experience focuses on developing competence in assessment skills and delivering trauma-informed treatment. Students will receive individual and group supervision. Prerequisite requirements for this program include enrollment in a master’s or doctoral program and prior experience using basic therapeutic skills.
Students will be assigned individual clients and will be required to attend weekly individual supervision, bi-weekly CATTTI treatment team meetings, and to be available to collaborate with various outside service agencies and health care providers.
